Attic INSULATION

What is Attic insulation?

Utility costs have steadily risen over time adding additional costs to heat and cool your home. Many people are asking how they can save on their energy bills. If your home was built before the year 2000, chances are your home is under insulated in regards to todays code. Attics can be blamed for as much as 30% of the total energy loss of your home - the best way to combat that is through proper attic insulation.

Attic Insulation Options

We offer a wide variety of insulation materials for attics. Wether you’d like a more traditional blown-in attic with either fiberglass or cellulose, or a more modern approach with spray foam - we do it all.

BLOWN-IN ATTIC INSULATION

Blown-in attic insulation is becoming more popular every year. It has many advantages over the traditional fiberglass batts or rolls, and installs quick and easy in most homes. It is great for old houses because it can actually be blown into the attics without a lot of trouble. We use two different types of blown-in insulation: fiberglass and cellulose.

  • Blown-In Fiberglass Insulation
The fiberglass based blown-in insulation is made from molten glass that is spun into fibers. Most manufacturers use 20%–30% recycled glass content. It’s also important that your attic insulation be at an adequate depth to reach the required R-Value for your local municipal code.

  • Blown-In Cellulose Insulation
Blown-in cellulose insulation is composed of up to 85% recycled newsprint. The remaining content is most commonly a mixture of ammonium sulfate and borate that functions as a fire retardant. These chemicals also deter insects, rodents, and mold. Because Blown-in insulation is loose material, it can take any shape and is much easier to fit into oddly shaped spaces such as vaulted ceilings.

  • Guaranteed Bag Count
All loose-filled insulation settles after installation — by Federal law and industry standards, blown-in fiberglass and cellulose is specified and sold at installed and settled density. The bag count and weight of material on the product coverage chart provides specific information on the amount of material that must be installed in order to produce the specified R-Value. Bolivar Insulation guarantees the correct bag count by providing UPC codes for the appropriate number of bags installed.

SPRAY FOAM ATTIC INSULATION

Spray foam insulation is also used in attics which provides the best air seal. Our company uses Icynene spray foam insulation in both open and closed cell variety. When spraying foam insulation in your attic, you have a couple of ways to go about insulating - you can spray foam in the roof deck, or you can spray foam in the attic flat. There’s really not a right or wrong method here, and our talented sales team will provide the best advice on your project.

Attic INSULATION
FAQs

What is the best Attic insulation?

There are many variables that come into play when selecting the best insulation (budget, efficiency needs, and structural information). While each insulation has it’s own place and strengths, we typically say spray foam insulation is best (if cost prohibits), with fiberglass, and cellulose following closely behind.

How much Attic insulation do I need?

We refer to local municipal code requirements to ensure we are prescribing at least the code requirement – it never hurts to exceed the code requirement. Most of the code requirements within our service area are at an R-38 minimum

Can I add to my existing attic insulation?

You can absolutely add to your existing attic insulation. We recommend keeping the insulation type the same when doing this. For those wanting to change their insulation type, we recommend having us remove the existing insulation and re-insulate completely.

Do you sell Attic Insulation Material?

Bolivar Insulation no longer sells material to the public. We do offer free estimates on installed material - in other words, it’s free to see how we can help you.

Do you remove Attic insulation?

From time to time, insulation removal is required due to the insulation being damaged, wet, or moldy. We do offer insulation removal as a service.

Do you insulate Attics in old homes?

We absolutely do! Typically we install additional attic insulation and can even install insulation in the crawlspace as well. In addition to old houses, we also insulate new construction homes as well.
